United Nations World Issues Reflection

Filed under: Uncategorized — marissa21 at 6:11 pm on Friday, June 1, 2007

Think about the presentations  and reflect on the projects your classmates presented and the information you listened to. Explain with details and specific information what you learned, what you found interesting, surprising, or shocking about the presentations you heard in class.

I found all the presentations extremely interesting in class. The presentations were about situations that we are facing in the world and what we could do to help them. I feel that all of the students presented in a loud and clear voice, they also took their situation seriously and weren’t just fooling around. I can see that from the outcome of the class’s hard work we all did our best effort and hope that everything turned out well. The group that did drugs, I learn ‘t different kinds of drugs, saw pictures of how they looked as a plant and then another picture of the drug it self in powder form. For the group that did girl child, I learn ‘t that out of a great number of people that are stopped from going to school over 50% of them are girls. Pretty shocking, eh? At least I think so! But overall I really enjoyed all the presentations and thought they were all really good! Keep the good work up guys!

What would you change to improve your project/presentation if you were to do the assignment again?

If I were to do this project again, I would have made sure from the start what way my group would present. As in using voicethread.com, powerpoint, IMovie e.t.c, because this time we started with voicethread.com and we weren’t really able to understand how it worked. We also found a powerpoint more easy and simple to do. I might also make sure that my group was a bit more organized. But otherwise I have nothing else I would like to approve on because we finished early and I feel that our final product was pretty good.

The UN Security Council Veto Power.

Filed under: Uncategorized — marissa21 at 7:25 pm on Thursday, May 3, 2007

Should the permanent members of the security council continue to retain their veto power? Why or why not?

It really depends on the situation that the security council is facing. For example if the situation was to be that the world should be covered in candy, then the security council says no but the people say yes. Then the security council has made the right decision because they thought about the future and what would happen after the candy was brought in, and for example the people could get obese and die of heart failure.
But if the situation was that a group of people from different countries get in a fight about who is strongest and then starts declaring war. Where as if the other people who aren’t specifically involved in this situation say we don’t want this war to the security council, but they say why not let them fight and the country that wins will be that one that has proven they are the strongest. Then the security council has made a mistake.

What new information has emerged?

The most important and newest information that has emerged is Mr. Negroponte visited Sudan, Libya, Chad and Mauritania. He hoped to increase the pressure on Sudan to let more of the UN people into Dafur, those people have a special name called the peacekeepers. Earlier this week it said that Sudan would allow 3,000 UN troops into Dafur to help the 7,000 African Union Troops. But hasn’t agreed  to let more in.

What did you find interesting about this topic?

What I found interesting about this topic is that this fight between the people in Sudan is still going on even after 4 years.
I feel its a long time to still be in a fight or more or likely as they would call war.

What did you like about the initial blog posting?

I felt that Andrea presented her Current Event very well and not to hard to explain, in a way that we could understand.  I also feel that the event it self was very interesting and a very good choice.

Famous Egyptians Reflection

In class when I saw all the presentations I thought they were all really good, and I learn’t a lot of different things about different Gods or Kings and Queens. I  like Andrea’s presentation because I learn’t this very interesting thing about Hatshepsut. She had to dress as a man and wear a fake beard because she thought it would be more convincing for the people when she would make her transition as a Pharaoh! I find it very interesting that she dressed as a man in front of her people! And I  really liked the way Andrea put her costume together! Way to go Andrea! I also realized that Sekheena’s person as the Pharaoh also had to dress as a man to be more convincing for the people. I also really enjoyed Nadiah’s presentation the way she expressed her whole speech with feeling and strength and I really loved her costume! Way to go Nadiah! I learn’t that Emma’s God Hathor was the goddess of love, joy, music, dance, beauty and happiness, I love Emma’s dress its really catchy! Way to go Emma!I really enjoyed seeing all the presentations today!

There are a few things I would change about my speech if I could. Firstly I would have to be to make a much better costume because I couldn’t find a picture of Ramses the 2 to give me enough detail so I decided to just put toilet paper all around me, but with that it kind of caused me to break before i got to present! (as in break I mean the toilet paper.) Secondly I would also have tried to memorize my speech and added more expression!

Famous Egyptians Speech

I Ramses the 2.

My country, the place I call home and the place others do too. My people all took care of their land with lots of love and were really good at arts especially making pyramids or monuments. Even though there was a big difference between the rich and the poor people they all had people or Gods they worshipped such as I, King of the19th Dynasty.

I was born to a royal family in the 19th dynasty. I lived all my life in Egypt and my mother was called queen Tu and my father was Sety 1. I was well known for my mighty military force,
And also known as a Pharaoh, builder, husband, father and military leader, I lived with a lot of wealth and strength.

I as the king of Egypt ruled for 67 years, and I had a very good life with over 100 children and all my lovely wives. But my most special wife was Nefertari. I loved architecture very much and built many monuments and temples, more than any other Pharaoh did. I tried concurring a lot of different places but failed or won depending on my strength and the strength of my enemy. But I did manage expanding the Egyptian empire with my might military force. When I died in 1237B.C my 12th oldest son called Merenpath took over the throne.

At my death I was buried in the valley of the kings, I was then mummified and put in my tomb to rest in peace after all those hard years of ruling and doing the best for my people.
And as far as im concerned my people were very happy that their country grew bigger and some even got larger land to live on.

Now in my long reign of ruling and helping my country, I don’t think that the country would have worked without me.
And as I have always known that my country is strong and will always have a passion for architecture. It reminds me of what a great ruler I have been.

What Is the Issue?

The Issue is that a school in Virginia has been attacked by a man with a gun and he has shot at least 30 students, a girl survived by playing dead lying down on the ground. In the German class 4 out of 25 students weren’t shot, when the gunman left the room the students thought he had gone but then 30 seconds later he came back and the 4 students forced them self against the door to block him from coming in, because the lock didn’t work. The gunman tried opening the door 3 times and then left. 2 students from another class were very scared so they jumped out of the top-story window, 1 of the student broke his leg while the other was in very bad condition just lying on the ground. The gunman killed 30 students and then killed him self so in total he killed 31 people. It has been one of the most deadliest shooting in the U.S history.

Who Is Involved?

The people involved are:

*The school

*The police

*The students

*The students families

Who is affected and how?

The ones that are affected are mostly the students and their families because a lot of the students have lost their lives and the others have been scared to death. And their families most be ever so sad about the incident and their children.

What would you do if you were directly involved?

I think that the best solution right now is to let the police do there job until we hear further notice and then maybe get people to help get contact with the government so he can take action with this.  And if I was to be directly involved I would make sure that the school gets guards outside the school and cameras around the school to keep an eye on whats going on. Not just for this school but also for others so it doesn’t happen any where else.

Title of the Article: U.S battered by another winter storm

Website Title: World News

1. What new information has emerged?

New information that has emerged is that the remaining of the old winter storm is now making its way up northwards to the eastern seaboard of the U.S. A layer at 60 feet of snow and ice has settled down on the roads and highways, a lot of flights have been canceled because of the bad weather and not being able to take off. There has been 7 traffic accidents in Wisconsin and 1 in Kansas. Billions of people had to sit at home in the dark because their power supply had gone, and electricity providers were trying to give thousands of people their electricity back in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska and Ohio. The ones living in Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana had very violent thunder storms and the very strong winds even flew cars off the rode. As the storm moved through the southern sates a tornado was reported and the tornado injured dozens of people in Arkansas.

What did you find interesting about this topic?

What I find interesting about this topic is that In the start I really thought it most be fun to have a lot of snow that you can play around in but then I found out when its a really bad snow storm like that I wouldn’t personally go out and play in it. I also find that snow is very powerful for example some people got injured while driving in cars because of the slippery roads.

What did you like about the initial blog posting?

I really like the way that Arfan presented his current event, It really wanted me to know more about it and he answered questions in a way that wasn’t to hard to understand. He also presented everthing in good detail.

What is the issue?

The issue is that:

  • A lot of children in India are used as workers at a very young age and are not treated well.
  • The children work extremely many hours and don’t get paid a lot of money.

Who is involved?
The people involved are:

  • The children’s right activists
  • Poor children in India.
  • The children’s employers
  • Their parents
  • The placement agencies.

Who is affected and how?

The ones affected are:

  • The poor children, their family’s.

Because they don’t get treated well and respected as humans.

What would you do if you were directly involved?

If I was directly involved I would try to make the world aware by publishing articles that tell what we can do to help these people and I would try to inform the people in India, who have taken these children into their home to work that its not right what they are doing.
